One week into the winter transfer portal window, Oklahoma’s roster for the 2025 season is starting to take shape.

 

As of Monday morning, the Sooners have added two transfer commits (Kennesaw State punter Jacob Ulrich and Stanford offensive lineman Luke Baklenko), while 23 players have departed the program via the transfer portal. Many of those departures were expected, though some have been more significant developments than others — at least from a contribution and production standpoint — as Oklahoma works to condense its roster down to 105 total players, with 85 of them on scholarship for next season.

 

 

This is modern college football,” Brent Venables said. “I don’t think any team’s going to be immune to that. Certainly, as we said a lot over the last several months, we’ve been preparing for that. We’ve got to get our roster to 105. There’s processing that takes place. You don’t like it; I’ve said I don’t like it, but it’s part of where we’re at right now. So, everybody has to figure out what’s best for them, and we as a program as we continue to try to grow and start back over with Team 131. That’s all part of the process. That’s right on schedule.”

 

 

 

As the offseason roster restructuring continues, Oklahoma is looking to add between eight and 12 players from the transfer portal, Venables said. That isn’t a hard number; there’s some flexibility there, dependent on space and any other roster movement that may take place. But there are certainly some positions the Sooners want to prioritize in the transfer portal — aside from refreshing the special teams room.

 

 

 

 

Oklahoma is also putting a “great focus” on the wide receiver room following six transfer departures in the last week, though the Sooners got big news over the weekend with Deion Burks announcing his return. Tight end is also a priority for OU, which is losing senior Jake Roberts and saw starter Bauer Sharp transfer to LSU. Other needs are expected to be addressed on the lines of scrimmage (as evidenced by the Monday addition of Baklenko) and in the secondary.

 

 

 

Some of the walk-ons are still trying to figure out, you know, what’s next for them,” Venables said. “(We) afforded them the opportunity to choose whether or not they want to still participate and be a part of the bowl game.”

 

Oklahoma’s roster for next season will continue to take shape in the coming weeks, as more transfers hop on board and as other players make decisions on their futures. These numbers are not exact, but rather an estimation based on departing seniors, players who have already entered the portal and those currently expected to return in 2025
