Manchester United appear to be closing in on another major piece of their midfield rebuild, with Carlos Baleba now on the verge of becoming a Red Devil.

The Cameroon international has emerged as one of the most talked-about transfers at Old Trafford this summer, and the latest developments suggest that the long-running pursuit is finally reaching its conclusion. United have agreed a deal with Brighton worth an initial £65 million, with a further £5 million available in add-ons, while reports indicate that Baleba has now completed his medical.

For a club desperately searching for greater control, energy and physical presence in midfield, Baleba’s arrival could hardly come at a more interesting time.

A Deal United Have Wanted for Some Time

Manchester United’s interest in Baleba is not new.

The 22-year-old midfielder was already on the club’s radar during the previous transfer window, but Brighton’s valuation made a deal difficult. United reportedly walked away from earlier negotiations when Brighton were demanding a figure above £100 million.

Fast-forward to this summer, and the circumstances have changed dramatically.

United have managed to negotiate a deal worth significantly less than the previous valuation, securing Baleba for an initial £65 million. With potential bonuses taking the package to around £70 million, the transfer represents a substantial investment but also a considerable reduction from the price Brighton were previously demanding.

It is a transfer that could eventually prove to be one of the most important pieces of United’s summer business.

Why Baleba Is So Important

Manchester United’s midfield has been one of the club’s biggest talking points for several seasons.

There have been talented players, but consistency, physicality and balance have often been missing. United have struggled to control matches when opponents press aggressively or attack through the middle that is where Baleba could make a difference.

The Cameroonian midfielder is known for his athleticism, strength, defensive work and ability to carry the ball forward. He can cover large areas of the pitch and provide the kind of physical presence that allows more creative players to concentrate on attacking. His arrival therefore isn’t simply about adding another midfielder it is about changing the structure of United’s midfield.

Carrick Could Have a Different United Now

Michael Carrick’s side has already undergone considerable midfield changes this summer.

United have brought in Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos, with Baleba set to become the third major midfield addition.

That gives Carrick several different options.

Baleba’s athleticism could allow Tielemans to operate with greater freedom, while Santos and Kobbie Mainoo could also benefit from having a powerful midfielder capable of doing more defensive work behind them.

It could give United a much more balanced midfield — something the club has desperately needed.

And that balance could become particularly important as United prepare for a season featuring both domestic competition and Champions League football.

The Timing Could Not Be More Interesting

Baleba’s arrival comes at a moment when United’s midfield weaknesses have already been exposed.

United suffered a surprising 2–0 defeat away to newly promoted Hull City, and the performance immediately intensified questions about the team’s ability to control games from midfield that result does not automatically mean Baleba will solve every problem.

Football is rarely that simple, But it does underline why United have been so determined to strengthen in the middle of the pitch.

A midfielder with Baleba’s physical profile could give United another way of responding when games become intense, chaotic or physically demanding.

Brighton Are Losing a Special Talent

From Brighton’s perspective, allowing Baleba to leave for around £70 million is a significant decision.

The midfielder joined the club from Lille in 2023 and has developed into an important Premier League player. He has made more than 90 Premier League appearances for Brighton and has established himself as a promising young midfielder at the highest level.

Brighton have built a reputation for developing young talent and selling players for substantial fees.

Baleba’s transfer fits that model perfectly.

The club will lose a talented player, but the financial package gives Brighton another opportunity to reinvest in their squad and continue their impressive recruitment strategy.

United Fans Will Have to Be Patient

There is one important detail surrounding Baleba that United supporters will be watching closely: his fitness.

The midfielder suffered an ankle ligament injury during pre-season. Reports have indicated that the problem is not expected to keep him out for an extended period, but he may still need time to regain full match fitness

The temptation will be to expect an instant transformation, especially given the size of the transfer fee.

But at 22, Baleba is still developing.

United are investing not only in what he can offer today, but also in what he could become over the next several seasons.

A New Chapter at Old Trafford?

If the transfer is officially completed as expected, Baleba could become one of the most important signings of United’s summer.

The £70 million package comes with pressure, of course.

But the bigger question is whether he can provide the qualities United have been missing for years: power, mobility, defensive strength and the ability to move the ball through midfield.

If he can do that consistently, his arrival could completely change the way United approach matches.

For now, the deal is almost there.

The medical has reportedly been completed, the agreement with Brighton is in place, and an official announcement is expected soon.

Carlos Baleba is almost a Manchester United player — and if he lives up to his potential, Old Trafford may finally have the midfield powerhouse it has been waiting for. 🔴🔥
