Aston Villa’s difficult start to the new Premier League season has become even more concerning after Arsenal defeated them 1-0 at Villa Park.
The defeat leaves Unai Emery’s side without a point or a goal from their opening two league matches. Their campaign began with a heavy 4-0 defeat against Brighton before another loss against the defending champions.
Villa’s problems are closely connected to the extraordinary changes made to the squad during the summer.
Several important players departed, including Ollie Watkins, Emiliano Martinez, Morgan Rogers, Lucas Digne and Youri Tielemans. Ezri Konsa also moved to Arsenal before returning to Villa Park as an opposition player.
The club’s decision to sell heavily was partly influenced by the need to comply with Premier League financial regulations, but the sporting consequences are now becoming obvious.
Emery is attempting to rebuild a team that achieved major success last season, but rebuilding while competing in the Premier League is an extremely difficult task.
There were some positive signs against Arsenal. Villa defended with greater discipline than they did against Brighton and managed to frustrate the champions for long periods.
But the lack of attacking threat remains a serious concern.
Villa supporters will now expect Emery to find solutions quickly. Another poor result could increase pressure around the club.
The next few matches may determine whether this is simply a difficult transition period or the beginning of a much deeper crisis at Villa Park.
