Manchester City enter the new Women’s Super League season under enormous pressure after completing a league and cup double last campaign.
The champions are widely expected to challenge for another title, but retaining the trophy could prove considerably more difficult.
City have maintained an impressive squad while adding important quality. Beth Mead has arrived from Arsenal, while Niamh Charles has also joined the club. At the same time, star striker Khadija “Bunny” Shaw has committed her future to City with a new four-year contract.
That combination gives Manchester City a strong platform.
Manager Andrée Jeglertz enjoyed an outstanding first season, winning both the league and cup after arriving at the club.
City also possess one of the strongest home records in the division and have not lost a league match at the Joie Stadium since February 2025.
However, expectations have changed.
Last season City were chasing the title. This time they will be the team everyone wants to beat.
Chelsea, Arsenal and Manchester United will all have ambitions of challenging for major honours, meaning City cannot afford to relax.
The Women’s Champions League will also create another demanding schedule.
The biggest question is whether City can handle the pressure of defending their domestic crown while competing on multiple fronts.
If Shaw stays fit and the new signings settle quickly, City could remain the team to beat.
