Sheikh Jassim bin Hamad Al Thani has reportedly reignited his interest in taking over Manchester United, with claims that a fresh bid from the Qatari group has been submitted for the Premier League giants.

The development could reopen one of the most closely watched ownership sagas in English football after Sheikh Jassim previously walked away from negotiations to purchase the club.

The Qatari banker, who is the son of former Qatar prime minister Sheikh Hamad bin Jassim bin Jaber Al Thani, was involved in a lengthy bidding process for Manchester United in 2023. His group had proposed a full takeover of the club, with plans reportedly centred around acquiring 100 per cent ownership.

However, the process eventually ended without an agreement being reached with the Glazer family, who had put Manchester United up for sale in November 2022.

Sheikh Jassim subsequently withdrew from the process, while British billionaire Sir Jim Ratcliffe and his INEOS group eventually secured a minority stake in the club.

Could the Qatari Bid Return?

The latest reports suggesting that Sheikh Jassim has submitted another offer could represent a significant change in the situation at Old Trafford.

His previous takeover proposal reportedly valued Manchester United at several billion pounds and included ambitious plans for investment in the club’s football infrastructure, stadium and training facilities.

A renewed bid would therefore be closely monitored by Manchester United supporters, particularly those who have continued to call for a change in ownership.

The Glazer family remains Manchester United’s controlling shareholder, despite Ratcliffe’s minority investment. INEOS currently has significant influence over football operations, but a successful full takeover by Sheikh Jassim’s group would fundamentally alter the club’s ownership structure.

What Would Sheikh Jassim’s Return Mean?

If the reported bid is confirmed, the immediate question will be whether the offer is strong enough to convince the club’s current owners to sell.

Sheikh Jassim’s previous proposal was understood to have been attractive because it involved a complete acquisition rather than simply purchasing a minority stake.

His camp had also promised substantial investment in Manchester United, including improvements to Old Trafford and the club’s Carrington training complex.

For supporters frustrated by the club’s ownership situation and recent struggles on the pitch, a fresh Qatari takeover attempt could generate considerable excitement.

However, negotiations could once again become complicated by Manchester United’s valuation and the expectations of the existing shareholders.

Manchester United Await Confirmation

At this stage, the reported new bid should be treated cautiously until it is confirmed by reliable sources close to the negotiations.

The original takeover process demonstrated just how difficult an agreement can be, with several potential buyers showing interest before Ratcliffe ultimately completed his investment.

If Sheikh Jassim has genuinely returned with a formal offer, Manchester United could once again find themselves at the centre of a major ownership battle.

For now, supporters will be waiting for further details on the reported proposal, including its value, structure and whether the Glazer family is prepared to consider another approach.

One thing is certain: if Sheikh Jassim is officially back at the negotiating table, Manchester United’s ownership story may have entered another dramatic chapter.
