Chelsea defender Marco Palestra appears to be edging closer to a return to competitive football as he continues his recovery from injury at the club’s Cobham training base.

The 21-year-old Italian defender has yet to make his competitive debut for Chelsea since arriving from Atalanta during the summer transfer window, but there are growing signs that his return could be approaching.

Palestra was one of Chelsea’s most notable summer arrivals and became the first signing of new head coach Xabi Alonso. He featured regularly during pre-season and was expected to compete for a place in Alonso’s squad during the opening weeks of the 2026/27 campaign.

However, an injury disrupted those plans and forced the defender to miss Chelsea’s early competitive fixtures.

Palestra continues his recovery at Cobham

The latest developments surrounding Palestra are encouraging, although Chelsea are continuing to take a cautious approach with his recovery.

Palestra recently provided a positive update on his condition, saying that he was feeling much better but was still a few days away from returning. That suggested the defender was entering the final stages of his rehabilitation rather than dealing with a long-term absence.

However, Chelsea head coach Xabi Alonso subsequently confirmed that Palestra was still not ready to return against Leeds United in the Carabao Cup.

Alonso stressed that there was no reason for the club to take an unnecessary risk with the defender and said Chelsea would assess his situation on a game-by-game basis.

That cautious approach is understandable, particularly given Palestra’s importance to the squad and the fact that he has not yet played a competitive match for the Blues.

Is Marco Palestra back in individual training?

There has been growing interest among Chelsea supporters about whether Palestra has returned to individual work at Cobham.

Chelsea have continued their training programme at their Surrey base, while Palestra has been working towards regaining full fitness. However, it is important to distinguish between being back at Cobham and progressing through rehabilitation and being confirmed as having returned to full first-team training.

At the moment, the available information indicates that Palestra is progressing, but there has been no clear official confirmation that he has completed a full return to team training.

Chelsea’s own training coverage has previously shown Palestra working with the squad at Cobham during pre-season. He was among the new arrivals pictured on the training pitch as Alonso’s side prepared for the new campaign.

His current situation is different, however, with the defender being managed carefully following his injury.

Chelsea taking no unnecessary risks

Palestra’s situation is part of a wider fitness picture at Chelsea.

Moises Caicedo has also been dealing with an injury issue, while Jordan Henderson and Emmanuel Emegha have been unavailable as well. Alonso has therefore had to manage several fitness concerns during the opening weeks of his Chelsea tenure.

The manager’s comments regarding Palestra suggest that Chelsea are particularly keen to avoid rushing him back.

That could be important for a player who is still adapting to a new league, a new club and a new tactical system. Palestra arrived with significant expectations after establishing himself in Serie A, and Chelsea will want him to return when he is physically ready rather than risk another setback.

When could Palestra return?

There is currently optimism that Palestra could be available around the middle of September, although no definitive return date has been announced by Chelsea.

Some injury trackers have listed September 12 as a potential return date, but that should not be interpreted as confirmation that he will definitely feature that weekend.

The most important indicator will be his progression from individual rehabilitation into full training with his Chelsea teammates.

Once Palestra is able to complete full sessions without restrictions, Alonso will then have to decide how quickly to integrate him into competitive action.

A gradual return would be the logical approach, particularly because the defender has not yet made his competitive Chelsea debut.

Why Palestra’s return matters to Chelsea

Palestra’s return could provide Alonso with another important defensive option.

The Italian was signed with the expectation that he would compete for a regular role, and his versatility makes him an interesting option for Chelsea’s defensive structure.

With a demanding schedule ahead, having another fit defender available could be particularly valuable. Chelsea will be competing in the Premier League and domestic cup competitions while also managing the physical demands of a long season.

Palestra’s ability to operate in different defensive roles could therefore give Alonso additional tactical flexibility.

For the player himself, the immediate objective is much simpler: complete his recovery, return to full training and finally make his competitive Chelsea debut.

Chelsea fans will be watching closely

For Chelsea supporters, the next significant development will be seeing Palestra back involved in unrestricted first-team training.

His recent comments that he is feeling much better provide reason for optimism, while Alonso’s decision not to rush him back indicates that the club is prioritising his long-term fitness.

So, while it is encouraging to see Palestra moving closer to a return at Cobham, it would be premature to say that he has already completed his comeback.

The clearest picture at present is that Palestra is progressing through his recovery and Chelsea are carefully assessing his readiness. If he can move into full team training without experiencing another setback, his competitive debut could finally be within sight.

For now, Chelsea supporters will have to wait for the next training update before knowing whether the highly rated Italian is ready to take the final step towards returning to Alonso’s matchday squad.

The good news is that Palestra appears to be getting closer. The next major milestone will be a confirmed return to full team training at Cobham.
