The possibility of Gerrard returning to Rangers is guaranteed to generate attention among supporters. However, while the latest reports and social-media posts have sparked excitement, there is an important distinction between Gerrard being linked with Rangers and Gerrard actually wanting to replace current manager Derek McInnes.

Recent appearances at Ibrox have only added fuel to the speculation. Gerrard has been seen around the Rangers setup, including during the club’s recent meeting with Celtic, leading some supporters to wonder whether there could be more behind his renewed presence.

But being present at Ibrox does not, by itself, demonstrate that a managerial return is being negotiated.

Is Gerrard Really Looking to Replace Derek McInnes?

This is where the latest viral claim requires some caution.

There is currently no strong evidence establishing that Gerrard has formally asked to take over from Derek McInnes or that Rangers are preparing to replace their current manager with the former boss.

What About Derek McInnes?

For now, McInnes remains the Rangers manager.

The former Aberdeen and Kilmarnock boss arrived at Ibrox with considerable experience of Scottish football, and the club’s current focus is on his tenure rather than an immediate return for Gerrard.

Recent results also need to be considered before drawing conclusions about the manager’s position.

Rangers’ 3–0 victory over Celtic was a significant result, while a run of positive performances has given McInnes the opportunity to establish his own identity at the club.

That does not mean managerial changes cannot happen in football. They can happen quickly. But there is currently a substantial difference between saying that Gerrard is being discussed by supporters and claiming that he is actively preparing to replace McInnes.

Could Steven Gerrard Return One Day?

A future Gerrard return cannot be ruled out.

Football is unpredictable, and managers sometimes return to clubs where they have previously enjoyed success. Gerrard’s history with Rangers means his name will probably continue to surface whenever the club’s managerial position becomes a subject of debate.
