KLOPP DREAM START RUIN AS GAKPO RESCUES NETHERLANDS
Jürgen Klopp was denied victory in his first competitive match as Germany manager after former Liverpool star Cody Gakpo struck a dramatic stoppage-time equaliser for the Netherlands.
Germany appeared to be heading towards a perfect start to the new era after taking the lead through Felix Nmecha in the 32nd minute.
Klopp’s side defended their advantage for most of the second half and goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen produced several important saves.
But the Netherlands refused to surrender.
With Germany desperately trying to protect their lead, Cody Gakpo produced the decisive moment.
The former Liverpool forward finished a quick counter-attack in stoppage time to rescue a 1-1 draw for the Dutch.
The result was particularly painful for Klopp because Gakpo spent several years working under him at Liverpool.
Instead of celebrating a winning debut, Klopp was forced to settle for a point against a Netherlands team managed by former Barcelona boss Xavi.
The draw gives both managers one point from their opening Nations League fixture.
For Klopp, however, the performance offered encouraging signs despite the late collapse.
Germany created opportunities and controlled long periods of the contest.
But the former Liverpool manager will know that protecting leads against elite opposition remains an area that needs work.
And Gakpo has already ensured Klopp will remember his first night in charge.
