The latest South Carolina Gamecocks news from the last week, starting with a lopsided win on Saturday for the football team.

With starting quarterback LaNorris Sellers (and some other impactful players) not playing due to injury, Shane Beamer’s South Carolina football team still whipped the Akron Zips 50-7 at Williams-Brice Stadium on Saturday.

The Gamecocks are heading into an off week before taking on the top-10 Ole Miss Rebels on October 5th, and injuries could be a major story heading toward that game. Quarterback LaNorris Sellers, running back Rocket Sanders, wide receiver Jared Brown, tight end Michael Smith, defensive tackle Monkell Goodwine, and linebacker Bangally Kamara all are dealing with injuries. In a Sunday update, Coach Beamer said he believes that all of those players will be on the field against Ole Miss.

Following a huge recruiting weekend when USC played LSU, last week included a few updates for the Gamecocks’ efforts in the high school recruiting game.

4-star EDGE commitment Jaquavious Dodd was bumped up into the top-100 in On3’s newest updated national rankings.

Kevin Wynn, a 4-star defensive tackle commitment of the Florida State Seminoles, is open to other schools’ recruiting pitches, including the University of South Carolina. He was named an All-American Bowl participant last week.

Another 4-star flip target, wide receiver Malik Clark, was on campus for the Gamecocks’ matchup with the Akron Zips. A Palmetto State native, Clark is a current commitment of the Florida State Seminoles.

A former Gamecock is getting a new professional opportunity.

Defensive end Jordan Strachan signed a contract with the Edmonton Elks of the Canadian Football League.

John Abraham, one of the greatest Gamecocks of all-time, is up for the biggest honor of his career.

A 4-star South Carolina basketball recruiting target announced his college commitment to a team other than the Gamecocks.

Class of 2025 forward Zymicah Wilkins picked the NC State Wolfpack over the weekend.

A’ja Wilson won the WNBA MVP and set another all-time record.

Wilson was a unanimous selection for the MVP honor (the third of her career). Earlier in the week, she set a new single-season record for rebounding. She also became the first player ever to lead the WNBA in points, rebounds, and blocked shots.

Wilson also was selected as the final WNBA Western Conference Player of the Week and WNBA Western Conference Player of the Month.

A former Gamecock basketball player will join another professional league.
