Louisville Men’s Basketball Secures Greek Standout Vangelis Zougris for 2025–26 Season

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The University of Louisville men’s basketball program continues its resurgence under head coach Pat Kelsey, announcing on Friday the signing of Greek forward Evangelos “Vangelis” Zougris to the 2025–26 roster. This addition underscores Kelsey’s commitment to blending international talent with his dynamic, high-intensity system.

🏀 A Rising Star from Greece

Born on October 14, 2004, Zougris has been making waves in European basketball circles. Standing at 6-foot-8 and weighing 120 kg, he plays the center position for Peristeri in the Greek Basket League (GBL). Zougris began his professional career in 2021 and has since developed a reputation for his tenacity and skill in the paint.

His performances in international competitions have been particularly noteworthy. At the 2024 FIBA U20 EuroBasket, Zougris averaged 11.6 points, 8.3 rebounds, 1.7 assists, 1.7 steals, and 1.4 blocks per game, earning a spot on the All-Star Five. His ability to impact the game on both ends of the floor has drawn comparisons to Greek legend Georgios Printezis.

🔴 Rebuilding the Cardinals

Since taking over in March 2024, Coach Pat Kelsey has orchestrated a remarkable turnaround for the Cardinals. In his first season, Louisville achieved a 27–8 record, including an 18–2 mark in ACC play, finishing tied for second in the conference. The team earned its first NCAA tournament appearance since 2019, signaling a new era of competitiveness. (Wikipedia, Forbes)

Kelsey’s strategy has involved a complete roster overhaul, emphasizing players with a “winning gene” and high basketball IQ. The addition of Zougris aligns with this philosophy, bringing in a player known for his toughness, competitiveness, and defensive prowess.

🌍 International Flair

Zougris’s signing marks a significant step in Louisville’s efforts to incorporate international talent into its program. His experience in European professional leagues and international competitions will add a new dimension to the Cardinals’ roster. With his combination of size, skill, and international experience, Zougris is poised to make an immediate impact in the ACC.(Wikipedia)

As the Cardinals prepare for the 2025–26 season, the addition of Vangelis Zougris represents both a strategic acquisition and a symbol of the program’s upward trajectory under Coach Kelsey’s leadership.
