Notre Dame Begins New Defensive Era with Chris Ash at the Helm

After two years of dominance under defensive coordinator Al Golden, the Notre Dame Fighting Irish are entering a new chapter on defense. Former Rutgers head coach Chris Ash has been named the new defensive coordinator, taking over a unit that has been one of the most formidable in college football. While Ash will bring his own schematic approach, he is expected to build upon the strong foundation laid by Golden.

Golden’s Legacy and Notre Dame’s Defensive Success

Under Al Golden, Notre Dame’s defense became one of the most respected in the nation. The Fighting Irish ranked among the top teams in key defensive categories, including points allowed per game, takeaways, and total defense. Golden’s leadership was instrumental in turning the Irish into a defensive powerhouse, helping the team remain competitive on the national stage.

However, with Golden moving on, the program has turned to an experienced defensive mind in Chris Ash. The former Rutgers head coach and longtime defensive coordinator brings a wealth of knowledge to South Bend and will look to maintain the high standard set by his predecessor.

Chris Ash Takes Over a Talented Roster

Ash steps into a favorable situation, inheriting a defensive unit loaded with talent. The Fighting Irish return several key contributors, including standout defensive linemen, versatile linebackers, and a secondary that has proven to be one of the best in the country. With experienced playmakers already in place, Ash will have the tools necessary to keep Notre Dame’s defense among the nation’s elite.

Having previously served as a defensive coordinator at Ohio State, Arkansas, and Texas, Ash has a deep understanding of how to build an aggressive and disciplined defense. His time at Ohio State, in particular, saw him help construct a national championship-winning defense in 2014.

Schematic Changes and the Future of the Defense

While Ash will certainly implement some of his own philosophies and adjustments, the core principles of Notre Dame’s defense are expected to remain the same—emphasizing speed, physicality, and creating turnovers. Ash is known for his ability to develop defensive backs, which could further elevate an already strong secondary.

One potential change could be the defensive front’s approach to pressure. Ash has previously favored aggressive blitz packages and a disciplined secondary that thrives in man-to-man coverage. While Golden’s scheme was more multiple and flexible, Ash could bring a slightly more structured system that still plays to the strengths of Notre Dame’s personnel.

Expectations for the 2024 Season

With Ash now leading the defense, expectations remain high for Notre Dame heading into the 2024 season. The Fighting Irish have consistently been in the playoff conversation, and maintaining their defensive dominance will be key to their success.

Fans can expect some growing pains as the team adjusts to a new coordinator, but with a wealth of returning talent and Ash’s proven track record, Notre Dame’s defense is positioned to continue its elite play. If Ash can successfully integrate his system while keeping the unit’s key strengths intact, the Fighting Irish could once again be among the best defensive teams in the country.

The new era of Notre Dame football is here, and under Chris Ash, the defense looks to remain one of college football’s most feared units.
