COLUMBUS, OH – Ohio State University has announced the hiring of former NFL head coach and defensive coordinator Matt Patricia as its new defensive coordinator. Patricia replaces Jim Knowles, who departed for Penn State after helping lead the Buckeyes to a national championship last season.

Patricia, best known for his tenure as the head coach of the Detroit Lions and as the defensive coordinator for the New England Patriots, brings a wealth of experience to Columbus. A three-time Super Bowl champion with the Patriots, Patricia is expected to bolster Ohio State’s defense as the team looks to defend its national title.

“We are thrilled to welcome Coach Patricia to the Ohio State family,” said head coach Ryan Day. “His experience at the highest levels of football and his defensive expertise will be invaluable as we continue building a championship program.”

Patricia, 49, spent the 2023 season as a senior defensive assistant with the Philadelphia Eagles. His hiring marks a significant move for the Buckeyes, who are looking to maintain their dominance in college football following their recent championship success.

Ohio State’s defense was one of the best in the nation under Knowles, and expectations will be high for Patricia to sustain that level of performance. His first test will come this fall as the Buckeyes prepare to defend their title in the upcoming college football season.
