Arsenal and Manchester City Make Strong Starts in Women’s Champions League
Arsenal and Manchester City have both made headlines on the opening night of the new UEFA Women’s Champions League league phase.
Arsenal left it extremely late against HB Køge, with Mariona Caldentey converting an added-time penalty to secure a dramatic 1-0 victory.
The result gave the European champions a winning start to their campaign as they begin another attempt to compete at the highest level of continental football.
Manchester City, meanwhile, produced one of the biggest comebacks of the opening night.
City fell two goals behind against Bayern Munich after Giulia Gwinn opened the scoring before a second Bayern goal put the hosts firmly in control.
The English side refused to collapse.
Beth Mead pulled one back before substitute Carlotta Wamser completed the comeback with an 86th-minute equaliser.
The 2-2 draw means City leave Germany with a valuable point after appearing to be heading towards defeat.
The opening night also produced draws involving Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain, while Inter recorded a victory over Häcken.
Chelsea will begin their own league-phase campaign on Wednesday against Austria Wien.
With Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester City all involved, English football has a strong presence in this season’s expanded competition.
And after Arsenal’s late winner and City’s comeback, the opening night has already delivered plenty of drama.
