Liverpool Reappoint Julian Ward
Liverpool have brought Julian Ward back as the club’s sporting director.
The 45-year-old returns to the position for a second spell after spending the last two years as Fenway Sports Group’s technical director.
Ward replaces Richard Hughes, who left Liverpool earlier this month to join Saudi Pro League club Al-Hilal.
His return gives Liverpool a familiar figure to lead the club’s football operations.
Ward has a long history with Liverpool. His association with the club stretches back more than a decade, during which he worked in scouting, recruitment, player development and sporting operations.
He previously became sporting director in 2022 after Michael Edwards left the position.
Ward stepped down in 2023 before moving into his role with FSG.
Now he is back at Anfield.
His appointment comes during another period of change for Liverpool. The club has a new manager in Andoni Iraola and recently completed a major squad rebuild.
Ward will work alongside the wider football department as Liverpool look to maintain their competitiveness domestically and in Europe.
His previous involvement with recruitment means he already understands the club’s structure and expectations.
Liverpool have therefore chosen experience and familiarity rather than bringing in an entirely new face.
Ward starts his second spell immediately.
The pressure will now be on him to help shape the next phase of Liverpool’s sporting project.
