Barcelona are reportedly preparing to make Tottenham Hotspur right-back Pedro Porro one of their major transfer targets ahead of the January transfer window, with head coach Hansi Flick said to be keen on adding more attacking quality to the right side of his team.

Porro has emerged as a player who fits the profile Barcelona are looking for, particularly because of his attacking ability, energy and experience in a possession-based system. The Spanish defender has developed into an important player for Tottenham since joining the Premier League club permanently, but reports suggest Barcelona could explore the possibility of bringing him back to Spain.

The potential move could, however, depend heavily on Barcelona’s finances. One scenario being discussed is the sale of current right-back Jules Koundé, with the French international reportedly valued at around €70 million.

Barcelona Consider Pedro Porro for January

Barcelona’s interest in Porro is not entirely new. The Catalan club have reportedly monitored the defender previously and have maintained an interest in his profile.

Under Flick, Barcelona have placed considerable emphasis on attacking from wide areas. Porro’s ability to contribute in the final third makes him an attractive option, particularly for a team that wants its full-backs to play an active role in possession and attack.

The Tottenham defender is known for his willingness to push forward, deliver crosses and create opportunities from the right flank. His technical qualities also make him capable of operating in advanced positions when required.

Those characteristics could make Porro a natural fit for Flick’s tactical ideas.

Barcelona’s interest reportedly became more serious as the club considered possible changes to their defensive structure. With Koundé attracting attention from elsewhere, Porro has increasingly been mentioned as a potential replacement.

Jules Koundé Could Be Key to the Deal

The biggest obstacle for Barcelona is likely to be the financial side of the operation.

The Catalan giants continue to operate under financial constraints, meaning a major incoming transfer could require the club to generate significant funds through player sales.

Koundé could therefore become central to the equation.

The France international has established himself as one of Barcelona’s most important defenders since joining the club from Sevilla. Although naturally a centre-back, Koundé has frequently played at right-back and has become a regular option in that position.

Reports suggesting that Barcelona could consider selling him have therefore attracted significant attention.

A valuation of approximately €70 million would provide Barcelona with substantial funds to reinvest in the squad. If the club were able to complete such a sale, part of the money could potentially be used to finance a move for Porro.

However, there is currently no indication that Barcelona have reached an agreement to sell Koundé or that Tottenham have agreed to sell Porro.

Tottenham’s Position Could Complicate the Transfer

For Barcelona, convincing Tottenham to negotiate could prove difficult.

Porro signed a new contract with Tottenham in 2026, reportedly extending his commitment to the Premier League club until 2031. That long-term agreement gives Spurs a strong negotiating position if Barcelona make an approach.

Tottenham would have little reason to accept a low offer for one of their key players, particularly given Porro’s importance to the team’s attacking structure.

Barcelona would therefore likely have to make a substantial financial commitment to convince Tottenham to part with the defender.

The situation could become even more complicated if Porro continues to perform at a high level during the first half of the season. Strong performances could increase both his value and Tottenham’s determination to keep him.

Porro’s Barcelona Connection

A move to Barcelona would also represent a return to Spanish football for Porro.

The defender has already built significant experience in Spain before establishing himself in England. His understanding of Spanish football and familiarity with the country’s tactical culture could make the transition relatively straightforward.

Barcelona are also looking for players who can contribute immediately rather than simply develop for the future. Porro’s Premier League experience could be an important factor in that regard.

His attacking mentality is perhaps the biggest attraction.

Barcelona have traditionally valued technically gifted full-backs capable of contributing to build-up play while also providing width. Porro’s style fits that philosophy, although adapting to Barcelona’s possession-heavy demands would still require adjustment.

No Agreement Has Been Reached Yet

Despite the growing speculation, it is important to distinguish between reported interest and a completed transfer.

Barcelona have not confirmed an agreement for Pedro Porro, while Tottenham have not indicated that they are prepared to sell the player during the January window.

Likewise, the reported €70 million valuation for Koundé should be treated as a figure being discussed in transfer reports rather than a confirmed asking price.

The next few months could therefore be crucial.

If Barcelona decide that Porro is their preferred target, the club may have to make room financially before making a serious approach to Tottenham. A Koundé departure could provide the funds required, but selling an established defender would also leave Barcelona needing to restructure their defensive options.

For now, Pedro Porro remains a reported target rather than a confirmed Barcelona signing.

With the January transfer window approaching, however, the situation is one worth watching closely. If Barcelona can generate sufficient funds and Porro remains open to the possibility of returning to Spain, the Tottenham full-back could become one of the more interesting names in the club’s winter transfer plans.
