Michael Carrick Insists Manchester United Can Survive Growing Crisis
Michael Carrick has insisted Manchester United can overcome their disastrous start despite mounting pressure following consecutive defeats to Manchester City and Brighton.
United have collected only four points from their opening four Premier League matches and were dramatically eliminated from the Carabao Cup after surrendering a 2-0 lead against Brighton at Old Trafford.
The defeat was particularly painful because it marked the first time in 50 years that United had lost a home match after leading by two goals.
Carrick, however, insists he expected difficult moments during his first full season as permanent manager.
The former United midfielder described the current period as an early-season “storm” but believes his team can work through it.
His next challenge is Fulham away on Sunday.
That fixture has suddenly become extremely important.
United need a positive result to stop the pressure surrounding Carrick from becoming even greater.
The manager also knows supporters expect a significant improvement after the club secured Champions League football last season.
Carrick’s biggest task is therefore restoring confidence.
United possess enough individual quality to compete, but their recent performances have exposed problems with game management, defensive organisation and mentality.
The Fulham match could provide the first opportunity to prove the criticism has been premature.
A defeat, however, would make the atmosphere around Old Trafford considerably more uncomfortable.
