Rangers Defender John Souttar Set for Shock Exit After Being Told His Future Is Elsewhere
Rangers defender John Souttar is reportedly preparing to leave Ibrox after being told that his long-term future lies elsewhere.
The 29-year-old centre-back has agreed a three-year contract with Greek side Aris Thessaloniki and is expected to travel for a medical this weekend.
Souttar still had one year remaining on his Rangers contract but was informed earlier in the transfer window that he was no longer part of Derek McInnes’ long-term plans.
The defender made 132 appearances for Rangers and played 46 matches last season.
His departure is therefore another significant change under McInnes as the manager reshapes the squad.
The timing is particularly interesting because Rangers have a huge Old Firm clash against Celtic on Sunday.
McInnes has already strengthened his central-defensive options, bringing in Ben Godfrey, Olwethu Makhanya and Emmanuel Fernandez during the summer.
Souttar’s departure therefore appears to be part of a deliberate rebuilding process rather than a sudden decision.
However, losing an experienced defender who has been involved heavily in recent seasons will still attract attention.
Rangers are currently enjoying four consecutive Premiership victories, but Sunday’s Celtic clash will provide a much bigger test.
McInnes is clearly building his own Rangers squad.
Souttar’s exit is another sign that the manager is serious about changing the team.
