Kevin De Bruyne has left football fans talking after offering his thoughts on Enzo Fernández and the enormous expectations surrounding the Argentine midfielder at Manchester City.

Fernández has stepped into a huge role at City following De Bruyne’s departure, but the Belgian superstar believes comparisons between the two players need to be treated carefully.

De Bruyne: Fernández Is a Different Player

De Bruyne reportedly acknowledged Fernández’s quality but questioned whether the Chelsea midfielder-turned-City star can simply replicate what he brought to Pep Guardiola’s side.

And that is understandable.

De Bruyne’s Legacy Is a Massive Challenge

The scale of De Bruyne’s legacy makes the challenge even greater.

During his Manchester City career, the Belgian became one of the club’s greatest-ever players, helping City win numerous domestic trophies and their first UEFA Champions League title.

His departure inevitably created a huge hole in Guardiola’s midfield.

Fernández therefore does not just have to perform well. Every outstanding pass, goal or assist will be compared with what City supporters became accustomed to seeing from De Bruyne.

That is an almost impossible standard.

A New Chapter for Manchester City

Ultimately, Fernández should be judged on what he brings to Manchester City rather than how closely he resembles De Bruyne.

If he can become a dominant midfielder in his own right, the club may eventually look back on this period not as the search for De Bruyne’s replacement, but as the beginning of a new midfield era.

For now, though, De Bruyne’s comments have added another layer to what promises to be one of the most fascinating storylines at Manchester City.
