Manchester City may have suffered an unexpected transfer setback involving one of their former stars.
Julian Alvarez has reportedly rejected the possibility of returning to Manchester City, despite interest from his former club. The Argentine striker has instead reiterated his desire to remain with Atletico Madrid.
Alvarez left City for Atletico after struggling to secure a guaranteed starting role at the Etihad Stadium, but his performances in Spain have ensured that his reputation remains extremely high.
City’s reported interest in bringing him back would have been a fascinating development, particularly given their need to maintain attacking depth.
However, Alvarez’s latest stance appears to have closed the door on a reunion, at least for now.
The situation could be frustrating for Pep Guardiola, who knows exactly what the Argentine can offer. Alvarez possesses the ability to play as a central striker, operate behind the main forward or drift into wide positions.
For City, the focus will now have to shift elsewhere as the transfer deadline approaches.
The development is also a major statement from Alvarez. Rather than returning to a familiar environment where he previously enjoyed considerable success, the forward appears determined to continue his Atletico project.
Whether City eventually return with another approach remains to be seen.
For now, though, Alvarez appears to have made his position perfectly clear: his future is in Madrid.
