Liverpool have started the new Premier League campaign with a dramatic draw, but the real excitement surrounding the club is currently happening away from the pitch.
After a 2–2 draw against Newcastle United, Liverpool manager Andoni Iraola has been left with plenty to consider as he attempts to reshape the squad and challenge for major honours this season.
The match at St James’ Park was a rollercoaster. Newcastle took the lead through Anthony Elanga before Liverpool fought back through Cody Gakpo. Joe Willock appeared to have won it for the hosts late in the game, but Dominik Szoboszlai converted a stoppage-time penalty to rescue a valuable point for Liverpool.
The result demonstrated Liverpool’s character, but it also highlighted some of the weaknesses that Iraola needs to address.
🔴 Liverpool want more firepower
One of the biggest stories surrounding Liverpool is their pursuit of Bradley Barcola.
The Paris Saint-Germain winger has reportedly become one of Liverpool’s major transfer targets, with negotiations and speculation intensifying as the transfer window approaches its conclusion. PSG’s reported valuation is believed to be around £120 million, making any potential deal a major financial commitment.
Barcola’s pace, creativity and ability to operate from the wing would give Liverpool another dangerous attacking option. His arrival could also provide Iraola with greater tactical flexibility as he looks to build an attack capable of competing with the Premier League’s best.
However, Liverpool are not putting all their eggs in one basket.
Minteh is another target
Liverpool have also reportedly been pursuing Yankuba Minteh of Brighton.
Brighton are believed to have rejected Liverpool’s approaches and are demanding a substantial fee, reportedly around £70 million. Liverpool could yet return with another offer as they attempt to strengthen their options on the wings.
There is also reported interest in Ibrahim Mbaye, giving Liverpool alternative options should their preferred targets prove impossible to sign.
The message from the club appears clear: Liverpool know they need more attacking quality.
What happens to Gakpo?
One of the more intriguing consequences of Liverpool’s transfer activity concerns Cody Gakpo.
The Dutch forward has attracted reported interest from Tottenham, although Liverpool are not currently believed to be actively looking to sell him.
However, the situation could become more complicated if Liverpool successfully sign multiple attacking players.
Gakpo was one of Liverpool’s scorers against Newcastle, demonstrating once again why he remains valuable to the squad. Selling him would therefore be a major decision, particularly if Liverpool are attempting to compete on several fronts.
Van Dijk wants reinforcements
Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk has also acknowledged the need for quality additions.
The defender has indicated that players and supporters alike want to see further reinforcements arrive, particularly as Liverpool attempt to rebuild after a disappointing previous campaign.
That adds further pressure on the club’s hierarchy to complete deals before the transfer window closes.
Iraola has already acknowledged that Liverpool need additional players, particularly in wide attacking positions.
The next few days could be crucial
Liverpool are not in crisis after one league game. A point away at Newcastle is certainly not a disastrous result.
But the opening fixture has made one thing obvious: this Liverpool squad still needs work.
With Barcola, Minteh and other potential targets being discussed, Liverpool supporters could be in for a very busy final stretch of the transfer window.
If the club manages to land one or two major attacking reinforcements, Liverpool’s season could take a completely different direction.
For now, the question is simple: who will Liverpool sign before the window slams shut?
