Marc Guéhi has made an impressive start to the 2026/27 Premier League season with Manchester City, putting the England international firmly in the spotlight following his dramatic impact against Bournemouth.
Guéhi, who joined Manchester City from Crystal Palace during the January 2026 transfer window, started City’s opening Premier League match of the new campaign under new manager Enzo Maresca. City eventually defeated Bournemouth 2–1 at the Etihad Stadium, but they had to come from behind to secure all three points.
Guéhi scores crucial equaliser
Manchester City fell behind in the 26th minute when Marcus Tavernier gave Bournemouth the lead. Despite controlling significant periods of the match and creating opportunities, City struggled to find the breakthrough.
Guéhi then became one of the decisive players.
With just six minutes of normal time remaining, the defender rose to meet a Rayan Cherki corner and headed the ball into the net to make it 1–1. His goal completely changed the momentum of the match.
City completed the comeback shortly afterwards when Joško Gvardiol scored in stoppage time, giving Maresca a winning start to his Premier League reign.
Guéhi deployed in an unusual position
One of the biggest talking points was not only Guéhi’s goal but also his tactical role.
Although primarily a centre-back, Guéhi was used in midfield during parts of the match as Maresca experimented with his system. Manchester City’s official match report highlighted his composed and disciplined performance in the unfamiliar role.
The tactical flexibility could become important for Guéhi as Maresca attempts to establish his own identity at City following Pep Guardiola’s departure.
What about Liverpool?
Liverpool remain strongly associated with Guéhi because of their previous attempts to sign him. The defender came extremely close to joining Liverpool before eventually moving to Manchester City. However, there is currently no strong indication that Liverpool are preparing an immediate move for Guéhi.
The current situation is therefore straightforward: Guéhi is a Manchester City player and is already playing an important role under Maresca. Recent transfer reporting around City has focused on other positions and targets rather than a potential Guéhi departure.
What happens next?
Guéhi and Manchester City will now prepare for their next Premier League fixture against Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park on Friday, 28 August. That match will carry an additional storyline because Guéhi will return to face his former club.
For now, the latest update is positive for the England defender. He has started the new season, scored an important goal and demonstrated that he can adapt to Maresca’s tactical demands.
**In short, Marc Guéhi is not currently on the verge of a move to Liverpool. He is an established Manchester City player, and his excellent start to the new Premier League campaign suggests that he could become an increasingly important figure in Maresca’s team.**
