The 2026/27 Premier League season has already delivered plenty of excitement, surprises and talking points, with several of England’s biggest clubs entering a new era.
The campaign began with major changes across the league, including a remarkable nine clubs starting the season with new managers. The managerial shake-up has added another layer of intrigue to what promises to be a highly competitive title race.
Arsenal Begin Title Defence
Arsenal have started their title defence with their eyes firmly set on another Premier League trophy. After winning the league last season, Mikel Arteta’s side will face strong competition from Manchester City, Liverpool, Chelsea and other ambitious clubs.
The Gunners will know that defending the title can be even more difficult than winning it in the first place. Consistency, squad depth and avoiding injuries could prove crucial as the season progresses.
Chelsea Start Alonso Era With a Win
One of the most closely watched managerial changes has been at Chelsea, where Xabi Alonso has taken charge.
Chelsea made an exciting start to the new era, defeating Fulham 3–2. João Pedro scored after only 31 seconds, while new signing Morgan Rogers also found the net on his debut. Cole Palmer added another goal as Chelsea held on for an important opening victory.
The result will give Alonso confidence as he attempts to build Chelsea into genuine title contenders.
Manchester City Begin New Chapter
Manchester City are also entering a new period following Pep Guardiola’s departure. New manager Enzo Maresca began his Premier League reign with a 2–1 victory over Bournemouth.
Erling Haaland remains one of City’s biggest weapons, and the Norwegian striker marked his 200th appearance for the club during the match.
City supporters will be hoping that Maresca can maintain the club’s winning culture while developing his own tactical identity.
Shock Defeat for Manchester United
It was a very different story for Manchester United, who suffered a surprising 2–0 defeat against newly promoted Hull City.
The result immediately raised questions about United’s ambitions and placed additional pressure on manager Michael Carrick. Losing to a newly promoted side so early in the season is certainly not the start United fans would have wanted.
However, there is still a long way to go, and the club will have plenty of opportunities to recover.
Liverpool Make Winning Start
Liverpool also began their campaign positively, defeating Sunderland 4–2 as new head coach Andoni Iraola enjoyed a winning start.
With major changes taking place across the Premier League, Liverpool will be hoping their new manager can quickly establish his style and keep the club challenging at the top of the table.
Transfer Spending Adds More Drama
Off the pitch, the Premier League transfer market has been equally dramatic. Clubs have reportedly spent around €2.7 billion during the summer window, demonstrating the enormous financial power of English football.
Chelsea have been among the biggest spenders, while several other clubs have also invested heavily in their squads.
With new managers, expensive signings and several clubs capable of challenging for the title, the 2026/27 Premier League season is already shaping up to be one of the most unpredictable in recent years.
The season has only just begun, but the drama is already here.
