Wrexham AFC co-chairmen Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds have officially signed a landmark development contract aimed at expanding the club’s youth academy across North Wales, in what is being described as a “generational investment” in the future of football in the region.
The ambitious agreement—valued at over £8 million—will see the establishment of three new satellite academy hubs in Bangor, Rhyl, and Llandudno over the next two years. The expansion is designed to scout, train, and nurture local talent between the ages of 8 and 18, with a focus on inclusivity, education, and long-term athletic development.
“We believe the future of Wrexham lies in North Wales—literally,” said McElhenney during the signing ceremony at the Racecourse Ground. “This isn’t just about building a stronger club; it’s about giving young people real opportunity, close to home.”
Reynolds, speaking remotely via video call, echoed the sentiment with his trademark blend of heart and humor:
“We’re not just looking for the next Gareth Bale—we’re building a path so that any kid with a dream and a decent first touch has a shot. Plus, Rob told me if I didn’t sign this contract, he’d write me out of It’s Always Sunny.”
The initiative includes:
- A new Elite Player Development Centre in Wrexham, acting as the central hub.
- State-of-the-art training pitches, classrooms, and wellness facilities at each site.
- Partnerships with local schools to integrate football and education.
- A dedicated Girls’ Academy Division, launching in early 2026.
Club officials say the expanded program will serve over 1,200 young athletes annually, with coaching staff growing by 45% to support the scale-up.
Manager Phil Parkinson praised the move:
“This gives us a stronger pipeline of talent and reinforces our identity as a club for the community, by the community.”
The Football Association of Wales has also endorsed the project, calling it a “transformative moment for grassroots football” in the region.
