Lionel Messi has officially announced his retirement from international football, bringing an emotional end to one of the greatest careers ever seen with the Argentina national team.
The 39-year-old confirmed his decision on Monday, August 31, saying the choice was painful but that he believes the time has finally come to step aside. Messi leaves the international stage after more than two decades representing Argentina and establishing himself as the nation’s record appearance holder and top scorer.
Messi’s Argentina career ultimately became a story of redemption. After painful defeats in major finals earlier in his career, the legendary forward finally lifted the Copa América in 2021 before leading Argentina to World Cup glory in Qatar in 2022. He also helped his country win another Copa América title in 2024.
His final World Cup campaign ended in heartbreak, however, as Argentina suffered a 1–0 defeat to Spain in the 2026 final. Despite the disappointment, Messi leaves with his international legacy firmly secured.
The retirement announcement does not mean Messi is walking away from football completely. The Argentine superstar remains an Inter Miami player, meaning fans can still watch him compete at club level.
For Argentina, however, an extraordinary chapter has now closed.
From the difficult early years to finally becoming a World Cup champion, Messi’s journey with the national team has produced unforgettable moments, historic achievements and countless memories.
The No.10 may no longer wear Argentina’s famous shirt, but his place in the country’s football history is already untouchable.
