Manchester United could be heading towards a major defensive overhaul next summer, with as many as six defenders potentially facing uncertain futures at Old Trafford.

The club’s defensive situation could change dramatically if United decide to take an aggressive approach to rebuilding their back line. Several players are approaching important stages of their contracts, giving the club an opportunity to make significant changes rather than continuing with incremental adjustments.

Six Defenders Could Be At Risk

Lisandro Martínez, Diogo Dalot, Noussair Mazraoui and Harry Amass are among the defenders whose long-term futures could become major talking points next summer.

Luke Shaw and Harry Maguire could also be involved in the reshaping of the squad, meaning United could potentially move on from as many as six defenders if the club decides that a more drastic rebuild is required.

However, the contract situations are not identical.

Martínez is currently tied to the club until 2027, while Shaw is also under contract until 2027. Maguire’s deal runs until 2027 as well, although his situation includes an option that could extend his stay.

Dalot and Mazraoui have longer contractual protection, reportedly running into 2028, although options within their agreements could still give United flexibility when making squad decisions.

Amass, meanwhile, represents a different situation as a young player whose future will depend heavily on his development and opportunities within the first team.

A Chance For A Complete Defensive Reset

United’s potential defensive clear-out would be significant because the club would not simply be replacing one or two players. It could represent a fundamental change to the structure of the back line.

The emergence of younger defenders such as Leny Yoro and Ayden Heaven gives United some foundations on which to build. Matthijs de Ligt also remains an important option, while the club can continue assessing other players capable of operating in a modern defensive system.

If six defenders were to leave, United could then target two or three new additions who fit the manager’s tactical requirements.

That would allow the club to build a defence around pace, physicality, technical ability and versatility rather than being tied to players inherited from previous regimes.

Who Should United Keep?

The biggest question is whether United should actually allow so many defenders to leave.

Martínez, when fit, has demonstrated the qualities needed to play a progressive style of football, while Dalot offers considerable versatility across the defensive line. Mazraoui has also shown that he can operate in different positions.

At the same time, injuries, consistency and age could all influence United’s decision-making.

Shaw’s fitness record is likely to be an important consideration, while Maguire’s future could depend on his role and whether United believe he remains suited to their preferred style.

For Amass, the priority should arguably be development rather than an immediate decision to sell.

United Face A Major Decision

A defensive rebuild of this scale would be risky, but it could also provide United with an opportunity to finally establish a coherent long-term defensive unit.

Rather than repeatedly replacing individual players, the club could use next summer to make several coordinated changes and construct a defence suited to the team’s tactical identity.

For now, there is no guarantee that all six defenders will leave. Contract options, performances, injuries and transfer-market opportunities will all influence the final decisions.

But if United decide that the current defensive group has reached the end of its cycle, next summer could mark the beginning of one of the biggest defensive rebuilds at Old Trafford in years.
