Ademola Lookman has responded to early-season criticism in the best possible way by scoring his first goal of the campaign for Atletico Madrid.
The Nigerian winger found the net during Atletico’s 3-1 victory over Sevilla, ending a two-match scoring drought and helping Diego Simeone’s side secure an important victory.
Lookman’s start to the season had attracted attention because Simeone used him as a makeshift centre-forward during the opening matches.
The decision was linked to the absence of Julian Alvarez and Alexander Sorloth, leaving Lookman playing away from his preferred left-wing position.
Simeone subsequently apologised publicly to the Nigerian, acknowledging that the role was not natural for him.
Lookman has now responded with a performance that could strengthen his position within the Atletico team.
His goal came from the left side, allowing him to operate in a position where he has traditionally looked more dangerous.
The Nigerian has also praised Simeone and his coaching staff, saying he continues to learn under the Argentine manager.
That relationship could prove important as Atletico attempt to challenge for major honours this season.
For Lookman, the objective is now consistency.
One goal is not enough to silence every critic, but it provides an important foundation.
If he continues producing goals and assists from his preferred position, Simeone may have fewer reasons to experiment with his role.
For Super Eagles supporters, Lookman’s return to form is equally encouraging as Nigeria prepares for another important international period.
