Super Eagles defender Benjamin Fredrick has finally returned to competitive football after spending 287 days on the sidelines with a knee injury.
The 21-year-old made his comeback for Brentford Under-21s on Monday, playing 45 minutes during a 5-1 victory over Sunderland Under-21.
Fredrick had been unavailable since November 2025 after suffering the injury while training with Belgian club FCV Dender, where he was playing on loan from Brentford.
His absence was particularly frustrating because he had been making progress with Nigeria and had featured in the country’s 2026 World Cup African play-off matches against Gabon and DR Congo.
The injury also forced him to miss the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, where Nigeria eventually finished with a bronze medal.
His return will therefore be welcomed by Nigerian supporters and the Super Eagles coaching staff.
At just 21, Fredrick remains one of Nigeria’s promising defensive talents, but his immediate priority will be rebuilding his fitness and match sharpness.
Playing 45 minutes is an encouraging first step, although Brentford will be expected to manage his return carefully after such a long absence.
The defender will now hope to progress from youth-team football back towards senior competitive action.
For Nigeria, having another young central defender available could become valuable as the national team continues rebuilding.
After 287 frustrating days away from the pitch, Fredrick finally has an opportunity to restart his career.
