Arsenal are set to lose Gabriel Martinelli after agreeing a club-record £55.7 million transfer with Saudi Pro League side Al Hilal.
The Brazilian winger has been granted permission to complete his medical, meaning the deal could soon be officially concluded. If completed, Martinelli’s departure will become the biggest sale in Arsenal’s history, surpassing the previous record received for Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.
Martinelli arrived at Arsenal as a young prospect and gradually became an important member of Mikel Arteta’s squad. His pace, movement and ability to attack defenders made him a dangerous option on the left side.
However, his position in the team has become less secure as Arsenal have continued to strengthen their attacking department.
The timing of his departure is likely to generate debate among supporters. Arsenal are competing for major honours and will now have to prove that losing Martinelli will not weaken their squad.
The financial side of the deal is certainly attractive, but money alone may not satisfy fans if the Gunners struggle to replace his contribution.
