Carrick Rejects Cunha’s Brutal Assessment After Manchester United Escape
Manchester United manager Michael Carrick has publicly disagreed with Matheus Cunha’s assessment of the team’s performance after the Reds escaped Fulham with a 1-1 draw.
Cunha admitted afterwards that Fulham appeared to show more energy during the match.
Carrick, however, rejected that suggestion and insisted his players continued pushing for an equaliser.
United desperately needed a positive result after consecutive defeats against Manchester City and Brighton.
Things looked even worse when Lisandro Martínez turned the ball into his own net in the second half.
United appeared destined for another defeat before Cunha produced a dramatic late equaliser in the 89th minute.
His shot took a major deflection before beating Bernd Leno.
The goal rescued a point but did little to hide United’s problems.
Carrick’s side now have only five points from their opening five Premier League matches, leaving them in 12th place.
The manager insists there were positive signs in the performance, but the statistics tell a more complicated story.
United struggled to create clear chances despite enjoying possession, while their attacking movements repeatedly broke down around the Fulham penalty area.
Cunha remains one of the few players showing consistent attacking urgency.
The international break now gives Carrick time to work on his system.
But if United return from the break with the same problems, pressure around the manager will only increase.
