Liverpool Scout Kees Smit

Liverpool are reportedly keeping a close eye on AZ Alkmaar midfielder Kees Smit as the club considers its midfield options for January.

Liverpool.com reports that scouts from several Premier League clubs watched the 20-year-old during AZ Alkmaar’s Europa League match against Sunderland earlier this week.

Liverpool are among the clubs linked with Smit, while Chelsea, Tottenham, Nottingham Forest, Aston Villa and Brighton have also reportedly shown interest.

The Dutch midfielder has attracted attention because of his technical ability and performances for AZ. His name has previously been linked with Liverpool, but the latest scouting activity has brought the story back into focus.

Liverpool’s midfield remains an area to watch under new head coach Andoni Iraola.

The Reds have started the Premier League season unbeaten, but three draws from their opening four league matches have increased attention on squad balance.

That could encourage Liverpool to explore another midfield signing when the January transfer window opens.

Smit is reportedly valued at around €60 million, although there has been no confirmed bid and no indication that a deal is close.

For now, Liverpool’s interest appears to be at the scouting stage.

The recruitment team will continue assessing the young midfielder before making any decision.

If Smit maintains his current level, however, his name could become one of the major stories of the January transfer window.
