VIRGIL VAN DIJK FIRES BACK AT DUTCH MEDIA IN HEATED PRESS-CONFERENCE CLASH
Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk has hit back strongly at criticism surrounding the Netherlands’ World Cup campaign after becoming involved in a heated exchange with a journalist.
Van Dijk was questioned about claims that he had influenced former Netherlands manager Ronald Koeman to switch to a back-five formation during the World Cup.
The Liverpool defender rejected the suggestion and said it was “utter nonsense”, insisting tactical decisions were made collectively by the coaching staff.
The Netherlands were eliminated by Morocco on penalties in the last 32 after the match went to extra time.
Van Dijk also pushed back against suggestions that he had somehow damaged Dutch football, describing that narrative as baseless.
The 35-year-old has retained the Netherlands captaincy under new manager Xavi Hernandez and remains an important figure for the national team.
His comments came before the Netherlands faced Germany in their Nations League opener, where Van Dijk was reunited with former Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp.
The defender has spent more than six years at Liverpool and worked under Klopp during one of the most successful periods in the club’s recent history.
Van Dijk’s confrontation has now become one of the major talking points surrounding the Netherlands during the international break.
