Brazilian winger Sávio made an immediate impression on his Tottenham Hotspur debut, scoring a goal and playing a major role in another as Spurs cruised to a 5–1 victory over Charlton Athletic in the Carabao Cup second round.
The highly anticipated debut came just days after Sávio completed his move from Manchester City to Tottenham. With Spurs looking to respond after a disappointing 3–0 Premier League defeat to Brentford, manager Roberto De Zerbi introduced his new signing from the bench in the 71st minute.
Sávio needed only 11 minutes to announce himself.
Instant Impact From the Brazilian
With Tottenham already leading 3–0, Sávio received possession on the right before cutting inside and finding space in the Charlton defence. Showing confidence and composure, he worked his way into a shooting position before firing a low finish inside the near post.
It was an impressive individual goal and immediately demonstrated the qualities Tottenham supporters will be hoping to see regularly this season: pace, close control, dribbling ability and the confidence to attack defenders.
But Sávio was not finished.
Just three minutes later, he was involved again as Tottenham added a fifth goal. The Brazilian drove into the penalty area, beating defenders before seeing his effort deflect off Ben Davies and into the net. The goal was officially credited to Davies, but Sávio’s contribution was unmistakable.
In roughly 20 minutes on the pitch, the winger had produced the kind of cameo that can quickly change the perception surrounding a new signing.
De Zerbi Sets Sávio a Target
Tottenham manager Roberto De Zerbi was clearly pleased with the Brazilian’s performance and has already challenged him to deliver significant attacking numbers this season.
According to reports, De Zerbi and Sávio have set a target of around 10 to 12 goals for the campaign. The Tottenham boss believes his wide players need to contribute more goals if Spurs are going to compete at the highest level.
That challenge could be particularly important for Sávio. During his time at Manchester City, he showed flashes of his talent but struggled to establish himself as a consistent goalscorer. His Tottenham debut, however, offered an early indication that he could have a much more influential role in north London.
A Much-Needed Boost for Tottenham
The 5–1 victory was also important for Tottenham as a team. Following their heavy defeat to Brentford in the Premier League, Spurs needed a positive result and a convincing performance.
Mikey Moore opened the scoring before Dominic Solanke doubled Tottenham’s advantage before half-time. Kevin Danso then made it 3–0 in the second half before Sávio took centre stage. Charlton scored a late consolation through Lloyd Jones, but Tottenham comfortably secured their place in the next round.
The victory now gives Spurs momentum heading into the next phase of the season.
Liverpool Awaits
Tottenham’s reward for progressing is a difficult Carabao Cup third-round trip to Anfield to face Liverpool.
For Sávio, it represents an opportunity to build on an outstanding first appearance and show that his debut was more than just a brief flash of brilliance.
One thing is already clear: Tottenham supporters have plenty of reasons to be excited about their new Brazilian winger.
One goal, a major contribution to another, and less than 20 minutes of action — Sávio could hardly have asked for a better start to life at Tottenham.
