Former Netherlands international Marc Overmars has stepped down from his role as sporting director of Royal Antwerp FC with immediate effect, citing serious concerns about his health.
The Belgian club confirmed the decision as Overmars acknowledged that years of accumulated fatigue and intense professional pressure had taken a significant toll on his physical and mental well-being.
In a statement explaining his decision, Overmars admitted that he had reached a point where he could no longer cope with the demands of his high-pressure position.
“All the years of accumulated fatigue and the immense stress sadly reached a climax,” Overmars said.
“I now feel very clearly that I can no longer handle this hectic, stressful professional life.”
The 52-year-old former Ajax and Arsenal winger also revealed the seriousness of his current condition, saying that his energy levels had become completely depleted.
“My energy is completely depleted today: if I don’t listen to my body now, my doctors predict that the chance of a bad outcome is very high,” he added.
Overmars Prioritises His Health
Overmars’ decision represents a major change for Royal Antwerp, where he had been responsible for overseeing the club’s sporting strategy and development.
His departure comes after a period in which the former footballer had already faced significant health challenges. The latest statement, however, makes clear that his decision to leave his position is primarily driven by the need to protect his health and follow medical advice.
Rather than continuing to work through his condition, Overmars has chosen to step away from the demanding environment of professional football administration.
The decision also highlights the enormous pressures associated with senior positions in modern football. Sporting directors are frequently required to deal with transfers, recruitment, coaching decisions, player development, club strategy and expectations from supporters, all while operating under intense scrutiny.
For Overmars, that pressure appears to have reached an unsustainable level.
A Distinguished Football Career
Before moving into football management, Overmars enjoyed an outstanding playing career.
The Dutchman represented some of Europe’s biggest clubs, including Ajax, Arsenal and Barcelona, while also becoming an important figure for the Netherlands national team.
At Arsenal, he was part of the club’s successful 1997–98 campaign and established himself as one of the Premier League’s most dangerous attacking players because of his pace, movement and finishing ability.
He later continued his career at Barcelona before eventually moving into football administration.
Overmars subsequently returned to Ajax in a senior sporting role, where he played an influential part in the club’s recruitment and sporting development. He later joined Royal Antwerp, helping shape the Belgian club’s footballing project.
Royal Antwerp Face a New Challenge
Overmars’ immediate departure leaves Royal Antwerp facing the task of finding a replacement for one of the most experienced sporting directors in Belgian football.
However, the priority for Overmars is now clearly his health.
His comments serve as a reminder that even highly successful figures in professional sport can face the consequences of prolonged stress and exhaustion.
For now, Overmars has made the decision to step away from the hectic world of football management and listen to the warnings from his doctors.
His future involvement in football remains uncertain, but his immediate focus will be recovery and protecting his long-term health.
Marc Overmars’ resignation is therefore more than a change in Royal Antwerp’s sporting department. It is a personal decision by a former football star to put his health ahead of his career.
