The 2026 Ballon d’Or shortlist has arrived — and football fans already have plenty to argue about.
Harry Kane, Erling Haaland and Lionel Messi headline the 30-man nominees after extraordinary seasons, while Kylian Mbappé, Jude Bellingham and Lamine Yamal are also among the leading contenders.
Kane enters the race after an outstanding campaign with Bayern Munich and England, while Haaland continues to dominate headlines after another huge goal-scoring season with Manchester City.
Messi’s inclusion is perhaps the biggest talking point. The Argentine remains a Ballon d’Or contender despite playing outside European club football, following an impressive year with Inter Miami and Argentina.
But the biggest controversy may be Cristiano Ronaldo’s absence.
The Al-Nassr superstar helped his club win the Saudi Pro League but has once again failed to make the shortlist. His omission has already reignited arguments about whether players outside Europe receive enough recognition.
The award ceremony will take place in London on October 26.
With Messi, Haaland, Kane, Mbappé and Yamal all competing, the race promises to be one of the most fascinating in years.
The big question is whether individual brilliance, trophies or international success will ultimately decide the winner.
One thing is certain: somebody’s favourite is going to be disappointed.
