Chelsea Charged By FA
Chelsea have been charged by the Football Association over alleged discriminatory chanting by supporters during their Premier League match against Fulham.
The incident happened during Chelsea’s 3-2 victory at Craven Cottage on August 24.
The FA alleges that Chelsea failed to ensure supporters did not engage in improper, offensive, abusive or insulting behaviour. The allegation relates to chanting connected with religion or belief.
The charge creates another unwanted issue for Chelsea away from the pitch.
The club had already warned supporters after the match that discriminatory behaviour would not be tolerated. Chelsea also said supporters identified as responsible could face serious consequences.
The FA process will now determine what action, if any, follows.
Importantly, a charge is not itself a finding of liability. Chelsea will have the opportunity to respond during the disciplinary process.
The development comes during a major period for the club.
Xabi Alonso is beginning his first season in charge, while Chelsea are trying to build a new identity on the pitch.
The club will therefore want the focus to remain on football rather than disciplinary matters.
However, the FA charge means Chelsea must now deal with another issue away from the pitch.
Supporters will wait to see what punishment, if any, eventually follows the investigation.
