Manchester City Women Hammer Aston Villa 4-1 to Take Early WSL Lead
Manchester City Women have made a perfect start to their Women’s Super League title defence after producing a dominant 4-1 victory away to Aston Villa.
The reigning champions now sit at the top of the WSL table as the only side with two victories from the opening two matches.
Jade Rose opened the scoring in the 14th minute before Mary Fowler doubled City’s advantage.
Villa briefly threatened a comeback when Amalie Vangsgaard pulled a goal back, but City responded strongly.
Khadija “Bunny” Shaw restored the two-goal advantage in the 74th minute before a late own goal completed the rout.
The result underlines City’s determination to defend their championship after lifting the WSL title last season.
Their attacking depth was once again on display, with several different players contributing to the victory rather than relying on a single goalscorer.
Villa competed for long periods but struggled to contain City after the champions increased the pressure following the home side’s goal.
With two wins from two, City have already established themselves as the team everyone else must chase.
The title race is still in its infancy, but Manchester City are sending an early warning that they have no intention of surrendering their crown.
