VAR Controversy Explodes as Haaland’s Derby Winner Is Declared Wrong
Manchester City’s dramatic 1-0 victory over Manchester United has taken another explosive turn after the Premier League’s refereeing body admitted that Erling Haaland’s winning goal should not have been allowed to stand.
Haaland struck in the 60th minute after City had already been reduced to 10 men following Phil Foden’s red card. The goal was initially ruled offside before VAR overturned the decision, judging that Enzo Fernández had not interfered with play.
However, the refereeing body later acknowledged that the decision was incorrect.
The admission will infuriate Manchester United, who had already complained about the decision immediately after the match. Michael Carrick questioned the logic behind the ruling, while Lisandro Martínez argued that Fernández’s position affected the play.
The controversy overshadowed an extraordinary City performance. Pep Guardiola’s side defended for more than an hour with 10 men and survived enormous pressure, with United hitting the woodwork twice.
Gianluigi Donnarumma also produced crucial saves to preserve City’s advantage.
For United, however, the frustration is enormous. They remain stuck on just four points from four league matches.
City, meanwhile, move to 12 points and remain firmly in the title race.
