Manchester City have reportedly identified Atletico Madrid midfielder Alex Baena as one of their potential transfer targets, but the Spanish club are currently making it clear that the 25-year-old is not for sale.

City are believed to admire Baena and have included the Spain international among the players on their transfer shortlist. His technical ability, creativity and versatility have made him an attractive option for the Premier League champions as they continue to assess potential additions to their squad.

However, any attempt to bring Baena to Manchester is unlikely to be straightforward.

Atletico Madrid Firm on Baena

Atletico Madrid are in a strong negotiating position because Baena is under contract with the Spanish club until 2030. That long-term agreement gives Atletico considerable control over the midfielder’s future and means they have little pressure to consider offers unless they decide that the proposal is too good to reject.

The club’s current stance is understood to be that Baena is not for sale, despite interest from Manchester City.

For City, that could mean negotiations would require a significant financial commitment if Atletico eventually become open to discussing a transfer. The length of Baena’s contract also strengthens Atletico’s position when it comes to determining his market value.

Why Manchester City Like Baena

Baena has developed a reputation as a technically gifted midfielder capable of contributing in the final third. His ability to create opportunities, operate between the lines and provide attacking quality makes him the type of player who could appeal to Pep Guardiola’s footballing philosophy.

Manchester City have consistently looked for players who can operate in multiple positions and adapt to a possession-based system. Baena’s technical qualities and tactical versatility could therefore make him an interesting option for the club.

Nevertheless, being included on a shortlist does not necessarily mean City will make a formal bid. Clubs regularly monitor several players for the same position before deciding which target best fits their sporting and financial plans.

Transfer Battle Could Develop

The situation could become more interesting if Manchester City decide to turn their admiration into concrete interest.

Atletico’s refusal to sell means City would potentially have to convince the Spanish side that a transfer makes financial sense. Baena’s long contract could also make it difficult to negotiate a reduced fee.

From Atletico’s perspective, keeping the midfielder could be just as important as receiving a substantial transfer fee. Unless Baena himself pushes for a move or Atletico change their position, City may have to look at alternative targets.

For now, the key message is clear: Manchester City are interested in Alex Baena, but Atletico Madrid do not currently want to sell him.

With the midfielder contracted until 2030, Atletico have the upper hand. Whether City’s interest develops into an official approach remains to be seen, but Baena’s name is certainly one to watch as the transfer situation develops.
